about

The Foggy Dew (Canon Charles O'Neill) is a song about the 1916 Easter uprising. It was penned by Canon Charles O’Neill, a parish priest at Kilcoo in County Down, in the north of Ireland. The melody is based on an old traditional Irish song called the 'Banks of Moorlough Shore.' The 1916 Easter uprising was staged by a small group of men and women, and was quickly destroyed by the British Army. This produced mixed feelings amongst the public; many did not support the rebels and felt the rising was a mistake. Sentiments changed when the British decided to execute the captured rebels as a warning, which was seen as a brutal and gross over-reaction. The events of the 1916 uprising, seemingly non-effective at first, came to shape the future of Ireland throughout the 20th century.
