about

Sam Hall (trad. English) is a ballad about an unrepentant criminal condemned to death. That man's name was in fact Jack Hall, who was hanged with his gang for burglary at Tyburn, December 12, 1707. The Tyburn gallows was the main place of execution for London and Middlesex until 1783. A version of this ballad was well-known by the 1780s, and remained popular into the mid-nineteenth century when it was retitled 'Sam Hall' in the 1850's by C.W. Ross, an English comic minstrel. Jack Hall was born to impoverished parents in London, where he was supposedly brought up to work as a chimney sweep. He soon turned pickpocket, and was first caught and convicted in 1682. Thus began his career as thief and burglar, leading to whipping, branding, imprisonment and finally hanging (as detailed in the 'Memoirs of the right villainous John Hall, the late famous and notorious robber.' The song appears to have been adapted to fit the region in which it was sung, some versions referring to Sam Hall being hanged at Tyburn Co. Middlesex, some at Cootehill Co. Cavan.
