about

The Galway Races (trad. Irish) is a traditional Irish song about the famous horse races held in the West of Ireland. The festival starts annually on the last Monday of July. Lasting over seven days, at Ballybrit Racecourse in Galway, it is one of the longest of all the race meets that occur in Ireland. The first racing festival held in Ballybrit was a two-day event with the first race meeting on Tuesday, 17 August 1869; a date that is referenced in the first line of the song. 'The Galway Races' was originally published as a printed ballad sheet from the late 1800s and was made famous by The Dubliners in the 1960s.
