about

Finnegan's Wake (trad. Irish) is a raucous irreverent song that tells the story of Tim Finnegan who has a particular “love of the liquor.” Tim has a 'drop' of craythur (whisky) every day to send him off on his day. This eventually leads him to his grave when, because of the drink, he falls from his ladder at work. The fall causes his apparent death and his friends call for a traditional Irish wake. After some formalities, the attendees proceed to drink and reminisce about poor Tim. Eventually, a brawl breaks out. Booze is flying, friends are brawling and a bottle of whisky breaks, scattering over Tim's corpse, which brings him back to life. Certainly the idea of the song is a direct reference to the words “uisge beatha” which translate literally to “water of life” from Irish, and after being abbreviated to “uisge” (water) gave origin the of the word whiskey.
