about

Come Out Ye Black And Tans (Dominic Behan) is a relatively modern Irish rebel song. The song refers to the Black and Tans, who were sent to aid the Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserves during the 1920s, following the easter uprising. The song was written by Dominic Behan as a tribute to his father Stephen who, like many Irish people, was not pleased with the British answer to the 1916 uprising, i.e. more repression. Stephen would come home after drinking and demand that the occupying forces come out and fight him “like a man”. The melody was adapted from an old air, Rosc Catha na Mumhan (Irish for Battlecry of Munster) by Piaras Mac Gearailt (Pierce FitzGerald c.1709-c.1792).
