about

Augathella Station (trad. Australia) is a drover song of colonial times, from the state of Queensland, Australia. Commonly referred to as 'Brisbane Ladies,' it is a bush adaptation of an older song called 'Spanish Ladies'. The lyric dates back to at least the 1880's and is credited to a shopkeeper, Saul Mendelsohn, who lived near Nanango. The place names used in the song were part of the route cattle drovers used when returning from Brisbane to the cattle station at Augathella (located in west-central Queensland). The word Augathella is an Indigenous Australian word meaning "camp on a waterhole," referring the Warrego River.
